China is the world's largest manufacturing country, producing over 70% of the world's mobile phones, and a large proportion of other electronic products such as PCs and tablets are also produced in China. Therefore, China has a great demand for chips. It is reported that the chips purchased by China account for more than 50% of the global chip market, and the amount of chips purchased even exceeds that of oil.

Storage chips are one of the main imported chips in China, and it is estimated that China's procurement of storage chips accounts for over one-fifth of the global storage chip market. However, before 2019, China had almost no production of storage chips, and global storage chips were mainly produced by South Korea, Japan, and the United States. China's dependence on global storage chips is very high.

To change this situation, China has made efforts to promote the research and production of storage chips. In 2018, Changjiang Storage produced the first generation of NAND flash storage chips, and in 2019, Hefei Changxin produced DDR memory chips. China has finally taken its first step in the storage chip industry.

Although Changjiang Storage began producing NAND flash storage chips in 2018, it only produced 32 layers of NAND flash storage chips at that time, while the mainstream global NAND flash storage chip technology was 64 layers. Changjiang Storage also realized its technological backwardness, so it did not mass produce 32 layer NAND flash storage chips, but only to hone production technology and improve the technical level of R&D personnel.

In 2019, Changjiang Storage developed a 64 layer NAND flash storage chip, catching up with the mainstream technology level of global NAND flash storage chips, and began large-scale production of NAND flash storage chips. At this time, China had truly achieved self-sufficiency in some NAND flash storage chips, but due to the fact that Changjiang Storage had only begun large-scale production, the domestic market's NAND flash storage chips were still mainly supplied by foreign countries.

At present, Changjiang Storage has developed 128 layer NAND flash, and it is expected that the NAND flash storage chip of this technology will soon be put into mass production. Currently, overseas storage chips are also promoting the mass production of 128 layer NAND flash storage chips, which means that China's NAND flash storage chips have approached the international leading level in technology.

The rapid improvement of NAND flash storage chip technology by Changjiang Storage cannot be achieved without the support of domestic enterprises, including Huawei. In 2019, Huawei was included in the entity list by the United States, which hindered the cooperation between American storage chip company Micron and Huawei. Huawei quickly cooperated with Changjiang Storage to develop NAND flash storage chips. Huawei had already developed SSD control chips several years ago and had a certain accumulation in storage chip technology. Moreover, it is the world's second largest mobile phone company and the top five server manufacturers, with a great demand for NAND flash storage chips. Huawei's support has also accelerated Changjiang Storage's development of more advanced NAND flash storage chip technology.

Since the reform and opening up, China has mainly relied on processing materials to develop its economy. Until 2007, the proportion of processing trade in China's trade exceeded 50%. Since then, the proportion of processing trade in China's trade has gradually decreased to about 30% in recent years. The proportion of high-tech products such as electromechanical and communication in China's exports has gradually increased, highlighting that Chinese manufacturing is gradually climbing towards high-end manufacturing.

China has approached the international advanced level in NAND flash storage chip technology in just a few years, which is undoubtedly a significant technological progress for China's manufacturing industry. It represents that China's manufacturing industry has finally formed a highly complete industrial chain after decades of efforts, with profound technological accumulation, gradual development, and rapid breakthroughs. It represents the transformation of China's manufacturing towards China's creation and further development.
